RE: preparing for camping in Texas

I think anytime except summer is a good time to camp in Texas. Personally I don't know why you'd be interested in Houston, but not too far away is Lake Sommerville where there is a state park, and great COE park (Rocky Creek). I guess the ferel hogs are a problem all over the state now, but not anything I'd let keep me away, just give 'em plenty of space, and watch for them on the highway.

RE: Lake City Colorado

It's been awhile since we've been there, but as best I can remember, there was only one in town at that time. Seems it was called Three Rivers, or something like that. Anyway, it was right on the river.

RE: Queen Wilhelmina,Arkansas (is it worth the gas)

It really is a pretty park, but not much to do for more that a couple of nights. One of my favorites is Petit Jean SP near Russelville, probably 150 miles further. PM me if you'd like directions to our "secret" favorite.

RE: Opinions on 5th wheel tailgates vs stock tailgates

If I am not perfectly straight backing under the trailer with the factory gate down, I will (and have) hit the front of the trailer. I've also tried pulling out from under the trailer with the gate still up (ouch!) Don't laugh. You're eiher one who has, or one who will.

RE: How many people have downsized their TV?

I can't see the advantage of down sizing. A Toyota Tacoma gets no better mileage than my one ton dually. I'd never recoup the difference with savings between diesel and gasoline, and would be giving up a huge difference in comfort and pulling capacity. Oh come on now... my little Toyota Tacoma 4x4, 5sp with the mighty 2.7L:B is getting 24 mpg on the highway, I do believe that is better than your dully. It is also a Towing Monster...:B But I do agree downsizing, in most cases, is not worth it. I did downsize and upsized, but not for mileage, Ford brought back my F350 and I traded my camper in for my RAM. and now we camp in our Log cabin. I'm just basing my mpg figures on what I was told by a Toyota owner. I get 19-20 local driving (part hwy/part city) and 21-22 on the highway. The trailer in my signature would squash a Tacoma.

RE: How many people have downsized their TV?

Yep, Cody, every situation and need is different. I don't drive as many daily miles as you, and don't use my truck nearly as much as I used to (most daily commuting done on the Gold Wing). My one ton is all most clear title now, and barring any drastic event it will last me as long as I need a tow vehicle.

RE: They still do what?!

I got one spanking (actually, a few slaps on the hand with a ruler) in second grade. I absolutely did not deserve it. She was a nutjob of a teacher who thought she knew who was talking behind her back. It wasn't me, it was the boy beside me. To this day I can still remember how powerless, outraged and ashamed I felt. That one incident convinced me that no teacher would ever strike my child for any reason whatsoever. Occasionally you may find a teacher like this, but when you take the authority away from the teachers, you can't expect them to teach. I never got a spanking at school, though I know I deserved several. The reason I never got one was because I knew what would happen when I got home. After I was grown and married, my dad telling how he wished he'd been easier on me and my oldest sister like he was with my two younger sisters. I replied that he didn't need to apologize for my upbringing, and that I wouldn't have traded places with my younger sisters. I've had a middle school boy on my bus for tha past three years who apparently has never had any leather applied where it counts. He has absolutley no respect whatsoever for anyone else. Unless something drastic happens in the next few years before he has to go into the real world, he'll never make it, and I told him that. Thankfully he's moved on to high school this year. Our prisons are full of young people who were never disciplined, but it has to start at home. If kids aren't taught to respect their parents, how in the world can they be expected to respect anyone. The local school board here met this week, and one thing on the agenda was whether to do away with corporal punishment. The local TV station held an on line opinion poll about it, and over 75% were in favor of keeping it.

RE: Would you want to be a teacher?!?!?

quote: Special Education becomes more complicated when you add SED (Socially Emotionally Disturbed) to the mix, some of which are accompanied by a “wrap around” (an adult paid to follow this kid and wrap their arms around the student to contain them when they go berserk). The demands on the school system far exceed the schools’ ability to satisfy them. I drive a "special need" bus. I reported to my supervisor that the only "special need" some of these have is to have their butts whipped. Once I drove some of them in to the bus yard and had him come out to meet them. I heard one Dallas area principle on the news say that if the parents do not teach their kids to respect them, they won't respect anyone else. It has to begin at home.

RE: The first time you met your spouse!

I was recently widowed, and attended a singles Sunday School class that was meeting at that time at the local Red Carpet Inn. I like to tell people we met at a motel. Been very happily married 34 years now.

RE: Has anyone had a Dometic Refridge quit due to the recall??

If it failed during the warranty period they'll fix it. If it failed outside the warranty period (as I suspect yours has) they won't. Unless I'm reading wrong, you'll be footing the bill on this one. It really sucks too. Sorry about your troubles. I understand Dometic is no longer replacing the cooling unit. However, when we bought our trailer it was already four years old. The fridge stopped working almost immediately. For a couple of years we used a household electric fridge, which I seriously was considering putting in to just replace the Dometic. Then we got a recall notice from Dometic. They replaced the entire cooling unit PLUS the electric heating element. If it should go out again, I will replace it with an electric household unit.

RE: Had to laugh...me and a dozen others

I would have asked you if you wanted to buy me a new truck, and if not, to keep your nose up in the air and keep on walking. I have had people ask me how my truck tows, and I tell them that it handles the trailer great, but the next truck I buy will have more HP, but only when this truck gets too old/unreliable/I finally find a grade that my truck can't conquer /or I otherwise can talk myself into going into DEBT. I enjoy taking to people that ask me this, as they seem genuinely interested. If someone just came up to me and told me that "my truck was too undertrucked for my trailer", I would not even bother to show them the specs that say that my truck and trailer are within weight limits, but I would tell them to stuff their big old head in the big old place on their body where the sun has never shined. Sounds like that's where they already had their heads to me.

RE: Now I've seen it all.

No use in those of us moaning about the price of diesel even looking. I suspect it would take a Peterbuilt to pull it, and who'd have a use for a rig that size except perhaps full timers or maybe somebody wanting bragging rights.

RE: Removable 5er hitch pins

I bought 1/2 inch pins at Tractor Supply with a handle on one end, and bought a set of matched locks that would fit through the hole on the other end.
